For HR Generalists ·
What you'll accomplish
You'll use Claude to turn a pile of raw survey responses (new hire feedback, engagement surveys, exit interviews) into a clear thematic analysis with specific insights — in 15 minutes instead of half a day.
What you'll need
Pull the open-text responses from your survey tool. You want just the free-text answers — not the multiple-choice ratings (those you can analyze with your survey tool's built-in charts).
What you should see: A column of raw employee text responses
Open claude.ai and start a new conversation. Use this template:
I'm an HR Generalist analyzing [new hire survey / engagement survey / exit interview] responses from [number] employees.
Please analyze these responses and provide:
1. Top 3-5 positive themes (with representative quotes)
2. Top 3-5 concerns or areas for improvement (with representative quotes)
3. Any urgent issues that need immediate attention
4. A 2-3 sentence executive summary I can share with leadership
Responses:
[Paste all responses here, numbered]
What you should see: Claude ready to receive your data
Number each response (1., 2., 3.) and paste them all into the message. Send.
What you should see: A structured analysis with labeled themes, supporting quotes, and your executive summary
If a theme needs more exploration, ask follow-up questions: "Which specific responses support the theme about [topic]? What actions would you recommend?"
Copy Claude's analysis into a Word doc or Google Doc. Add your own commentary on the business context. Format it for your leadership presentation.
For exit interviews: "Analyze these exit interview responses. Identify: top reasons for departure, common themes, any retention risk factors, and actions that might have prevented these departures."
For engagement survey deep dive: "These are responses to the question '[specific question]'. What's the sentiment distribution? What are employees really saying underneath the surface?"
For quick pulse check: "Scan these 10 manager feedback responses. Flag any that suggest a serious performance or culture issue I should follow up on."
